John E. Costigan was born in 1888 in Providence RI., He was employed at H. C. Miner Lithographing Co. where learned both art and printmaking. He had exhibitions throughout the United States including the Library of Congress and the Art Institute of Chicago. His work is included in major collections such as the Library of Congress and Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Design in 1928. He Lived in Orangeburg until his death in 1972. The Print “Child with Goats” was one of only 20 lithographs created by the artist. It was made in editions of 156 and was printed by Theodore Cuno of Philadelphia. The subject of the print was the suggestion of Dorothy Lathrop in part because of her interest in animals and the fact that by that time no prints of animals were commissioned by the club.
